Somedays are harder than others. And you know what? That’s ok.
It’s ok that life isn’t all roses and rainbows because if it was we wouldn’t appreciate how wonderful it can be. I know that we all get that on a logical level, but sometimes I think emotionally we forget. Darkness allows us to appreciate the light, we know joy because we’ve felt sorrow, we’re thankful for health even more when we’ve been sick… there are opposites for everything in life. When things don’t work out how we expect them to, when we’re tired and moody, sad or lonely, recognizing it’s a natural part of life makes it bearable.
Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he’s been robbed. Most putts don’t drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is like an old time rail journey–delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.

Life happens. Instead of searching for what’s gone horribly wrong or being convinced life is out to get us, we can look at the hard times, the bad days, and low moods with curiosity and compassion and know that this too will pass if we let it.
That’s the important part… we have to let it pass. If we gather our problems close, hang on to them for dear life, and use them define us we can get stuck in a really yucky place.
The next time you’re struggling, find a quiet place and feel everything, let it wash over you… how does it feel? where is it in your body? does it have a color? a texture? a smell? what is it? Anger, fear, sadness, frustration? Give it a name… one word, not a story, just an emotion. Then watch until it fades…
With practice you can do this anywhere, on the go, around others if necessary. It’s amazing how feeling your negative emotions can free you from them instead of letting them dictate your moods for hours or days.
